Larry Bishop, one of the country's leading portrait artists, is a native of Alabama and currently lives near Irondale where he maintains a studio and a horse farm.

Larry has completed more than 300 private and corporate commissions throughout the country.

" There is nothing more rewarding or more challenging for me than creating a fine portrait," says Larry. "A large part of the reward is seeing the person experience the joy of the process along with me."

As for the challenge, Larry has made art his life's work. "As a child I loved drawing and painting and that early interest has led to many happy discoveries,"

Larry completed his degree in art at the University of Montevallo in 1966. He served three years as a weapons officer aboard the USS Boston in the Tonkin Gulf then returned to Alabama and began his pursuit of a career in art.

After more school and positions as art director and photographer, Larry became a free-lance illustrator. "During the seventies and early eighties I enjoyed doing illustrations for sporting magazines and circus posters for Ringling Brothers." Larry has many funny stories to tell about this period in his life.

"As I completed more renderings of people [Gunther Gebels and David Larebley for Ringling, Bill Dance, Teddy Roosevelt, Zane Grey and Bear Bryant for sports publications and prints, Linda Fratiani, Mickey Mouse, and Goofy for Disney's World on Ice posters - yes, Mickey and Goofy are people, they're just a little plastic! ]
I started to love that aspect of my craft which allowed me to get to know people and work together with them to create a sincere likeness as well as a beautiful painting."
